The Centre for Post Graduate Legal Studies, Department of Policy and Management Studies, TERI School of Advanced Studies, New Delhi, organized a special guest lecture on the theme “Space Sustainability Issues and Law” on 23 April 2025 at 2:30 PM onwards. The lecture aimed to introduce students to the emerging legal and governance challenges associated with the sustainable use of outer space.
The session was delivered by Mr. Aaditya Vikram Sharma, Assistant Professor at Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Delhi, and a PhD Scholar at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata. Drawing on contemporary developments in international space law and sustainability governance, the speaker discussed the growing concerns surrounding space debris, responsible satellite operations, and the need for stronger global regulatory frameworks to ensure the long term sustainability of outer space activities.
Mr. Sharma highlighted how rapid commercialization and increased participation of private actors in the space sector have intensified the need for effective legal norms and cooperative international mechanisms. He also reflected on the role of international treaties, national regulatory approaches, and emerging policy discussions aimed at safeguarding the outer space environment for future generations.
The session was moderated by Dr. Manini Syali, Faculty at TERI School of Advanced Studies, who facilitated an engaging interaction between the speaker and students. The lecture concluded with a thought provoking discussion where students raised questions on space governance, sustainability, and the future of international cooperation in space activities.
The lecture provided valuable interdisciplinary insights and helped students appreciate the evolving interface between sustainability, technology, and international law.
