ANNOUNCEMENTS
Over the past half century, the global community has been debating the mode of economic growth, amid challenges of environmental degradation, energy transition and climate change. India among the several emerging economies, though at crossroads, has chosen a trajectory of sustainable development for ensuring inter-generational equity and inclusiveness in its growth journey. As India is growing economically amid an increased pace of urbanization, the burden on resource utilization and management is also increasing. Two prominent sectors facing significant challenges are energy and urban development, which are bound to increase due to climate change. Addressing these challenges will require trained professionals who can assess the problems, think critically by integrating multiple sectors and create evidence-based solutions. The focus of Department of Sustainable Engineering (DSE) at the TERI SAS is to develop a cadre of professionals having requisite knowledge and skillsets towards addressing the current and envisaged challenges faced by humanity by promoting scientific, technological and policy innovations for strengthening local, regional, and global development agendas.
DSE offers MTech and doctoral programmes in areas of Renewable Energy Engineering & Management (REEM), and Urban Development Management (UDM). The Department is cognizant of the complex environmental, socio-economic, and political challenges that require an integrative approach towards engineering and sustainability. The DSE encourages collaboration with relevant stakeholders including industry, government, academic & research institutions, and multi-lateral organizations to deliver practice-informed research and teaching.
The curriculum of programmes offered by DSE is an eclectic mix of foundational and advanced courses which promotes both critical and creative thinking. The students at DSE are drawn from diverse branches of engineering, science, architecture, and planning which cultivates robust peer learning. The faculty at the DSE has wide experience and expertise across multiple domains, touching upon the two main themes of the Department – renewable energy and urban development.
DSE is committed to provide an intellectually stimulating and culturally diverse environment for:
• a holistic development of students to enable them to reach their fullest potential
• the discovery and application of knowledge in energy, environment, urban development, policy, and governance which promotes national goals on sustainable development
• outreach to community as a service/social commitment for furthering the cause of sustainability
DSE envisions to be a leading voice advocating to embed the sustainability perspective within the discipline of engineering through its multi-disciplinary teaching, cutting-edge research, and advocacy initiatives. It strives to constantly enhance its industry aligned innovative curriculum, and engaging pedagogy to create a cadre of engineering professionals who will be able to contribute and lead towards sustainable development pathways.
The Department of Sustainable Engineering at TERI School of Advanced Studies, serves as a dynamic hub for interdisciplinary research, innovation, knowledge dissemination and capacity building, integrating energy science, engineering, economics, policy, sustainability, computing, and management. Its holistic ecosystem bridges teaching, research, and industry engagement, ensuring that academic knowledge translates into societal impact in areas such as sustainable development, energy transition, along with skill development for national as well as international energy landscape.
Through rigorous academic curricula complemented by hands-on learning in Energy Science, Renewable Energy Technology, and Simulation Laboratories, students gain both theoretical depth and practical competence. Mandatory internships, industry-defined projects, and living-lab approaches—such as campus-wide smart meter audits, in-house wind turbines and functional Battery Energy Storage System—equip graduates to transform ideas into real-world solutions. Exposure to energy markets, ESG compliance, electric mobility, hydrogen, and advanced solar technologies ensures a competitive edge in emerging energy sectors.
The research-driven curriculum fosters critical thinking, innovation, and ethical leadership. Courses on sustainable development, ESG principles, and energy policy prepare graduates to balance economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity. Regular curriculum updates, informed by industry and expert feedback, introduce cutting-edge topics such as EVs, hydrogen, carbon management, AgriPV, and BIPV, are very inspiring for students to launch start-ups and ventures in clean energy.
Faculty members advance cutting-edge research in renewable technologies, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, building energy, sustainable mobility and AI-driven energy systems. Their work translates into impactful publications, technological innovations, and policy inputs, reinforced by collaborations with industry and government agencies. These partnerships contribute directly to national energy goals, sustainable development objectives, and workforce upskilling, including reskilling over 500 professionals through advanced PG Diploma programme. By embedding industry engagement at every stage—through joint supervision, guest lectures, and collaborative projects—the Department bridges academia and industry. Over 375 graduates have already contributed meaningfully across the energy value chain, emerging as job-ready professionals capable of delivering impact from day one. The department actively engages with industry and policy makers for curriculum development, lecture delivery, internship and placement. The M.Tech programme in Renewable Energy was started with support from Suzlon Energy Ltd. Courses on contemporary domains e.g. BIPV & AgriPV have been designed in consultation with GIZ, GmbH. For continuously upgrading the curriculum as per energy market scenario, extensive stakeholder consultation is carried out on regular basis with energy companies like IOCL, ONGC, BSES, Shakti Foundation, IEX etc. This effort results in internship and placement opportunities for students apart from an industry ready curriculum.
The Department of Sustainable Engineering, through its flagship M.Tech in Renewable Energy Engineering & Management and M.Sc in Energy Studies & Management along with B.Sc/Integrated M.Sc in Energy & Computer Applications, exemplifies how academic excellence, research innovation, and industry collaboration can converge to drive societal transformation and global sustainability leadership.
• To impart quality education in the domain of sustainable engineering focussing on renewable energy engineering and urban development and management
• To execute inter-disciplinary research which deploys technological options for optimal utilisation of resources and fosters policy advocacy in renewable energy and urban development sectors
• To build and enhance capacity among wider community for achieving national goals on energy security and sustainable urbanization
