The last few years have been the hottest years on record and there has been increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves across many parts of India. This risk is even more pronounced for cities like Delhi where the normal maximum temperature is already very high (>45C). Outdoor workers are one of the most vulnerable populations.
It gives us immense pleasure to inform you that the TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) has organised an awareness cum health check-up camp for outdoor workers (street vendors, autorickshaw drivers, construction workers etc) on ‘coping with heatwaves and extreme weather conditions in Delhi’ held on 17 April 2019. This was in line with Earth-day 2019 celebrations of the institute.
TERI SAS continuously endeavours towards building a sustainable and resilient society. The event was supported by alumni of the university and where we had done basic health check-up of around 200 outdoor workers, local senior citizens, and slum children. We made them aware of consequences of exposure of extreme heatwaves and how to cope with it. It was not only consultation from doctor but also it included testing, counselling and engagement with neighbourhood children and vulnerable people. Latter we have organised talk on the pain management and heat wave coping for the internal faculty members of the University.
We thank all the people who has supported this wonderful initiative where we can given back to society.
