The Institution Innovation Council (IIC) at TERI SAS, in association with Tata Cleantech Capital and Neeti Niyaman, organized a business challenge - SUSTAINOVATION. A total of 20 teams, comprising over 60 students of TERI SAS, submitted their business ideas on two themes EV Infrastructure & E-Waste Circularity. The winners and runner's up (for both the themes) were awarded with cash prizes and e-certificates. The competition showcased innovative thinking of students in addressing current sustainability challenges. It was conceptualized, planned and organized by Dr Sapan Thapar, IIC-Convener at TERI SAS, with support from student coordinators - Pragati & Prapti.
On November 14, 2024, the TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI-SAS) organized an insightful guest lecture titled “IP Law: Theory and Practice” delivered by Ms. Nayantara Malhotra, Founder and Attorney at Ostara Legal. This event was a collaborative effort by the Institute Innovation Council (IIC) and the Centre for Post-Graduate Legal Studies (CPGLS) at TERI-SAS. The lecture attracted a diverse audience, including students from the LLM, Biotechnology, Climate Science, and Energy Science programs, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the topic. The session was expertly moderated by Dr. Manini Syali, a faculty member of the institution.
Ms. Malhotra commenced the lecture by laying a strong foundation on the essential principles of Intellectual Property (IP) law, discussing key areas such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. She emphasized the role of IP rights in driving innovation and fostering economic development, particularly in today’s knowledge-driven economy. Her approach seamlessly combined theoretical insights with practical applications, making the session both informative and engaging for students across various disciplines.
A significant portion of the lecture was dedicated to exploring emerging trends and challenges in the realm of IP law. Ms. Malhotra addressed contemporary issues such as digital piracy, the complexities of IP protection in the digital age, and the growing concerns over patent trolling. She also highlighted the ethical and legal challenges surrounding biotechnology patents, particularly in relation to sustainability and public interest, which resonated with the interests of students from scientific backgrounds.
The session concluded with a highly interactive Q&A segment, where students actively engaged with Ms. Malhotra, posing insightful questions related to their specific fields of study The discussion underscored the importance of a nuanced understanding of IP frameworks, especially for those looking to innovate within the scientific and technological sectors.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Manini Syali praised Ms. Malhotra for delivering a thought-provoking and comprehensive lecture that successfully bridged the gap between legal theory and practice. Dr. Syali highlighted the value of such interdisciplinary engagements in enhancing the academic experience at TERI-SAS. The event not only enriched the students’ knowledge of IP law but also inspired them to explore its applications in advancing sustainability and innovation, aligning with TERI-SAS's commitment to fostering a multidisciplinary learning environment.
