At the fourth session of the Sustainability Lecture Series on the 27th of May, 2022, the students of M.A. Sustainable Development Practice welcomed Ms. Anjali Makhija, Trustee and CEO, SM Sehgal Foundation for a lecture on “Women in Rural Governance”. Ms. Anjali spoke on the need for gender equity in rural development - the role of empowerment and governance and the importance of perceiving rural women as catalysts. Her lecture stressed on the significance of women’s collectives, challenges of WaSH, local participation of women, need to work with men and boys, need to institutionalise the participation of women and on having effective policies. She also mentioned that the representation of women in Panchayats is not enough, and that recognition is equally important.
