Col. Sanjay is an active Climate and environmental related Disaster risk management professional. He has been instrumental in bringing paradigm shift in Disaster Risk Management from responsive to proactive management. He specializes in remote sensing, early warning and communication with which he has revolutionized the DM set up in India. Col Sanjay’s contribution in Lightning EW and Safe grid management, probabilistic and predictive model of forecast up to week for Cyclone, drought and flood advance which gives adequate warning for preparedness and hence minimum loss.
Lightning in India is the biggest killer as compared to other natural disasters .Every year more than 2500 people die due to lightning but is not notified by Government of India as a Disaster. Col Sanjay has been instrumental in undertaking Lightning and holds credit for his concept Lightning detection, forecast, capacity building and safe grid management system. He has been instrumental in creating Lightning safe schools, hospitals, villages and city in Jharkhand, Lightning safe Cyclone shelters in Odisha, safe hutments in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, North East and other states. He is convener of Lightning Resilient India Campaign and aims to reduce deaths by 80% in next 03 years. His efforts have started giving result and there has been drastic reduction in Lightning deaths in 2019 in India .As a result, humane deaths have come down by almost 50%.. He is known as Lightning man of India . Even UN had facilitated him for his contribution at Geneva during Global DRR Conference GP May 2019. Col Sanjay also has credit of setting up Disaster Management Systems in Jharkhand .He has had exposure to a number of major disasters like Super Cyclone. Koshi and Surat floods, Bhuj and Kashmir earthquakes. Currently, he is involved in operationalising the technology to augment solutions with Governments, UN/INGOs, academia and community. His core area is remote sensing, early warning , communication and technological intervention in Development & Disaster Management . Major achievements include Single Emergency Number 112, Lightning forecast and safe grid management system, Crowd Management Systems implemented in Shrawani Mela Jharkhand and Gangasagar, proactive drought management, Kisan Samridhi Yojna/ Mahavedh etc. are few successful concepts implemented in many states are to his credit.
Col Sanjay - a war decorated veteran from Air Defence branch of Armed forces has held prestigious operational and instructional appointments in field and MoD level . Post Armed Forces , he was instrumental in setting up Disaster Management in Jharkhand. He has also worked with UN institutions like UNDP and other international bodies like FEMA , KOICA (South Korea) etc. Col Sanjay hails from Ranchi, Jharkhand and is alumni of St. Xavier’s College Ranchi, IIM Ahmedabad , Defence Institute of Advance Technology Pune, , Berhampur University , II9 Fire and Rescue Services South Korea etc. He is a prolific writer and specializes on strategic and real time issues on climate change. Doordarshan, All India Radio and Discovery have made short documentaries on his exemplary work. He has 56 publications to his credit and is a key writer/speaker in media . His publications on Lightning “Annual Lightning Reports 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 and periodic reports are unique of its kind which gives out evident lightning strikes over India vis a vis its impact. Due to the contribution of Col Sanjay Srivastava, he is also known as Lightning Man of India
He is involved with scientific institutions & academia in Research and teaching. He is a regular speaker at institutions of repute like UNDRR, LBSNAA, IITs, IISc, IIMs and think tanks forum like NITI Aayog, National Health Authority, Institute of Social Sciences, TERI, mainly on disruptive technology. The campaign has huge impact and the death numbers reduced considerably in many states. Currently he is involved in development of National Programme on Lightning Risk Prevention and Mitigation with National Disaster management Authority (NDMA), Government of India. Col Sanjay Srivastava., along with his nonprofit scientific organisation, is committed to share his knowledge and experience in making a lightning resilient society.
