The global water demand continues to grow steadily at a rate of about 1% per year even when the population growth rates are reported to be steadily falling. Presently, 1.9 billion people (over a quarter of the world’s population) live in areas with potentially severe water scarcity and 3.6 billion people (nearly half the global population) live in regions that experience water scarcity at least one month per year. The water woes are further exacerbated by the intensifying of the global water cycle due to climate change resulting in wetter regions becoming more wet, and dryer regions become even more dry. This increased variation stands to increase the existing discrepancies between water demand and availability. Communities, especially youth play an important role in transforming societies and empowering this largely untapped potential and engaging with them as equal partners in development can fundamentally shape our societies for the better.
