Abstract: Urban sprawl and land use land cover change has been a topic of research for long. Urban
sprawl has been attributed for being the central cause in creating a large number of
environmental and other problems such as traffic congestion, loss in biodiversity etc. Thus, it is
important to monitor and assess the changes taking place in the landscape. Accurate information
on land use land cover changes and the associated urban sprawl can help decision makers adopt
strategies to mitigate the problems associated with it.In this study an attempt has been made to
study the process of urbanisation in the city of Delhi. Also, the state of land use land cover has
been predicted for the year 2020.Landsat images for the the years 1977,1999,2003 and 2009
were used to come up with land use land cover maps for the study area .A CA-Markov model was
used to generate a land use land cover map of Delhi for the year 2020. In addition ULAT was
used to visualise the type of urban growth taking place in Delhi. The term “Urban sprawl “
generally has a negative connotation to it, however it is the type of urban growth and its quantity
that should be looked at before judging its nature.(Sun et al,2013).
