Abstract: 3D Visualization is becoming a prevalent option these days since interpretation of
urban landscapes and environmental problems faced can be easily explained to the
non-expert audience. 3D Building Models have various applications in present day
scenarios such as, urban planning, catering to emergency response, flight simulator,
among many others. However, constructing a digital model is not an easy task, it is
expensive and not necessary that it gives out the accurate results and the other
processes to calculate elevation data would require expert skills. Thus, in this thesis
the estimation of building height is calculated using shadows and sun inclination
angle. These estimated heights are then used to construct 3 D building structures
using the open-source software, Google SketchUp. Building textures are also added
with the help of pictures taken using a DSLR camera of each and every specific
building in the area. Though certain limitations are seen, however, once the models
are prepared, they can be viewed on Google Earth and shared on 3D warehouse.
