Abstract: This report covers the various projects done as a part of the internship period in DESL from the
month of January to May 2012.
The title of the report is “Energy Diagnostic Studies in Industrial Buildings and Commercial
Buildingsâ€. It contains various works undertaken in the area of energy efficiency, renewable
energy and green building.
The first chapter gives an introduction to the project work that was undertaken during the fivemonth
training period and sets the tone of the report in general.
The second chapter gives an overview of the literature review of the various assignments that
were undertaken during the project work period. It broadly explains the deliverables that were
assigned to the author under each assignment, and the efforts made by her in accomplishing them.
The third chapter deals with the application of solar water heaters in four industries: chemical,
pharmaceutical, automobile and metal. The methodology of calculating an approximate size of
solar water heaters, as a part of initial assessment, is discussed subsequently. The chapter later
tells about the preparation of manual on solar water heaters.
Chapter four talks about the energy efficient lighting systems in commercial buildings. It
discusses how to design an energy efficient lighting system and to calculate the lighting
requirements in a space. Importance of daylighting is also discussed and so are methods and
technologies to incorporate daylighting in an office space.
The fifth chapter talks about the formulation of monitoring and verification protocols for the
eight sectors of the PAT scheme. The work assigned to the author under this was to assist the
team by studying the Aluminium sector.
