Abstract: This study focuses on identifying the possible applications of thermal energy storage. The different storage methods for thermal energy have been studied and a comparison of specifications based on the applications is done. Properties like specific heat, latent heat, thermal conductivity and the temperature ranges have been differentiated and tabulated for the various methods. Also, organizations involved in the research and development of thermal energy storage around the world have been compiled to a great extent.

In India, the advancement and implication of thermal energy storage is still in nascent stage. There is immense scope for incorporating thermal storage of energy in various applications, including power generation, but this needs further research on feasibility in the Indian scenario.

Key Words: thermal energy storage, sensible heat, latent heat, molten salts, phase change materials
