About 30,500 users of IOCL cobranded lanterns are creating smoke free environment across India. IOCL has created a testing facility at R&D centre for solar lantern. IOCL is working towards reduction in initial and operation cost for solar lantern retail and charging station.

The project study aims at developing a Business Model for selling of solar lantern through Kisan Seva Kendra*. The project followed Qualitative research tool for the methodology. The sampling method chosen for the study is Random sampling. The Qualitative research is carried out with In – depth Interview and Focus Interview as a methodology. The project study involves field visit to Sathla and Chakuni village where already a pilot solar lantern renting and selling business model have been implemented by IOCL in collaboration with TERI. Beside Qualitative research and Quantitative research, the visit had helped in forming a new sustainable business model. As part of the study, to understand the marketing aspect of IOC, the field visit to Marketing Office of Bareilly division is also conducted.

The Qualitative research at Sathla, Chakuni and Bareilly division office has helped to study the factors of operation and social issues from the working business model and to implement corrective measures in the new proposed business model for the solar lantern. The new business model is proposed in the study as a part of the recommendation where the challenges and issues of the pilot solar project are tried to be resolved.

The operational boundaries were identified, by carrying out detailed site visits and technical interviews with the people, in association with Renewable Energy &Sustainable Department of IOCL. The learning from the site visits were tried to be implemented in a proposed business plan. The following report gives a snap shot of the status of the pilot solar project implemented by IOC at Sathla and Chakuni in U.P. and proposed new business plan for the future implementation.
