Abstract: With the rapid increase in Hospitality Industry, It is being observed that Hospitality Industry is
leaving negative impacts on the environment. Due to increase in environmental awareness consumers
are paying greater attention towards protecting the environment and natural resources. Because of this
Hotel companies are increasingly encouraging environmentally friendly practices and embracing
sustainability through both developmental and operational strategies. With initiatives such as
education programs, CSR programs, eco-hotels or resorts, and the development of green building
concept of zero carbon emission and energy efficiency technologies etc.
Hotel companies are being promoted by rising energy costs, government pressure, consumer
expectations and the competitive landscape to increasingly make sustainability its top priority. This is
directly correlated to the development and operation of hospitality industry. Therefore, this project has
been developed with aim of developing criteria and benchmark for eco-friendly practices in Hotel
industry to provide opportunity to improve their operational activities.
The Eco-rating for hotels and resorts that are involved in Eco-friendly practices is a new notion,
which requires Hotels & resorts to include objectives of eco-tourism as part of Hotels and Resorts
management in general. Taking the objective of Green Hospitality as the principles, it is necessary for
Hotels and Resorts operators to aware about the environment concern, adjust their mindsets,
development strategies, management modes and services, to provide eco-friendly services to the
guests with the involvement if local communities, while conserving environment and generating
conservation and nature education.
The Eco-friendly practices are a king of system or process for the Hotel and Resorts operators to
achieve their environmental goals and objectives. In order to guide present practice, an eco-friendly
Hotels and Resorts is defined by the criteria like – Hospitality Industry with the concept of sustainable
development, which insist and encourage “green†consumerism, protect the environment and the
sustainable use of resources.
