Large amount of solid waste generated in urban areas and inefficient solid waste management efforts marks the seriousness of problem. This report emphasizes on developing a benchmarking matrix for assessing the efficiency of solid waste management services provided in various mega and metro cities of India. For this purpose, significant indicators have been identified which are needed to be measured for such an assessment. Benchmarking of Solid Waste Management services and practices is necessary to support policymakers in planning and decision making. It helps in extraction of data on service given by various agencies and practices followed so that it can be evaluated and utilized in taking steps to improve the situation. Hence, benchmarking highlights the need of high efficiency in such services to ensure cleanliness, health and hygiene and safety of the citizens. Present situation of SWM in metro cities have also been summarized in the report.
