Abstract: In a country like India, where 69% of population is still residing in villages, rural
energy access is a critical matter. Dependence on conventional energy resources and
traditional biomass to meet daily household needs like domestic lighting, cooking and
agricultural requirements is very low in efficiency, harmful for health, environmental
unfriendly as well as highly cost effective. Gradually decreasing deposits of
conventional energy resources, their unavailability and increasing prices coupled with
shooting energy demands due to increase in number of consumers is going to exhaust
current sources of rural energy access very soon. Switching to renewable energy
resources for the rural energy access could help to deal with this upcoming problem.
This report presents a case study of a village of district Kishanganj in Bihar where
energy access is one of the major constraints of development. A comprehensive energy
access plan is developed based on natural resource assessment and socio-economic
scenario of the village promoting renewable energy as primary driver.
