Abstract: Today we are witnessing rapid growth of industrialization and urbanization. This trend has been
simultaneously accompanied by the increase in vehicular population, increased pollution and also
increased energy consumption in terms of per-capita energy consumption. The transportation
activities particularly related to motor vehicles have been closely identified with increasing air
pollution levels in various urban centers of the world (CSIR-CRRI) Besides air pollution, the
pollutants emitted are responsible for various regional and global problems viz. global warming,
acid rain, ozone depletion etc. which are even threatening the environment and the existence of the
living beings including humans. Several studies have revealed the potential negative impacts of road
transport on social and ecological environment, notably in terms of congestion, air pollution, noise
annoyance and accidents. Similar trends and problems are being faced in the metropolitan capital
city i.e. Delhi. To cope up with ever growing road transportation related problems, the Delhi Metro
Rail Corporation, laid major emphasis on the encouragement and establishment of Mass Rapid
Transit System (MRTS).It has come up with the needed alternative and solution for improving the
traffic and environmental condition in the city. But like any other large scale project MRTS also may
have significant bearings due to numerous positive and negative impacts. Thus, an attempt has been
made to assess the impacts likely to occur due to the proposed project on the basis of the primary and
secondary baseline data obtained from various authentic sources .Since the project is being funded
by international agency JBIC and is located in the vicinity of Okhla Bird Sanctuary even though it
doesn’t come under the purview of EIA study as per EIA Notification, 2006 an EIA study has been
conducted. In order to have an environment friendly, efficient a nd sustainable project an
Environment Management Plan has been prepared.
