Abstract: Climate change is becoming more obvious reality day by day and posing growing threats in the form
of increased flooding, drought, extreme events, growing water scarcity, rising sea levels and the list
keeps on lengthening. Coastal cities in Asia are becoming increasingly vulnerable to flooding, land
subsidence, salinisation of ground water, cyclones and storm surges and other such events. Most of
the megacities in Asia are located in coastal low-lying areas which more susceptible to these
disasters. This requires an immediate action so that people and communities living in these areas are
able to cope with such events and adapt certain measures which increase their adaptive capacity and
resilience. Cities in the two states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh also face the same problems
and are the main target areas of this project. This project aims at increasing the resilience coastal
communities in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by development of adaptation and mitigation guides
which take into account the local problems in that particular city. The guides follow an integrated
approach towards climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction. Also an
analysis of community based projects in the region is done which will help in developing a regional
networking strategy and will help the local authorities to make better use of the resources available
to cope to cope with impacts of climate change.
