Impact of trade liberalization on exports of cotton from India

Abstract: Cotton has a significant contribution in India’s agricultural and industrial economy. It has emerged as a big support of Indian exports in the recent past. The present study is an attempt to analyse the impact of trade liberalisation on exports of cotton from India through an empirical and conceptual framework. The study estimates the export demand function for Indian cotton incorporating the liberalisation variable among other variables to examine the influence of trade liberalisation on cotton exports from India during the reference period. The study also highlights the prospects and strategies for liberalisaiton of trade in Indian agricultural commodities especially cotton develped from a set of learnings from the results and analysis of the study. The period of the study is 1975-2009. The technique of estimation used is time series data analysis.
