Abstract: The performance of any firm or industry can be evaluated through its efficiency or productivity
measurement. Rising economic activity has given rise to increase in demand for energy. Given
that coal is the main source of energy there is a need for efficient utilization of coal. This paper
looks into the efficiency of the coal industry of India. Also since coal acts as inputs for major
industries which often lead to emission of pollutants, the paper intends to study the impact of
including carbon dioxide (a pollutant) as a bad output on the efficiency of these firms.
