Abstract:

Energy Efficiency is one of the means of energy conservation. It presumes importance in meeting India’s Energy security challenge. The SSI (MSME) sector in India contributes significantly to economic growth and employment generation. But it has remained underserviced from a technology and knowledge point of view. The use of Energy Efficient technologies is seen as an important measure for enhancing the competitiveness of the energy intensive SSIs. The study aims at understanding the energy efficiency and economic efficiency nexus bringing out the role of government intervention to improve the adoption rates of Energy Efficient Technologies for the small scale units. With the help of Energy Conservation Supply Curves the existence of energy efficiency gap is shown. This calls for government sponsored information programs and other financial and economic incentives to remove the information, financial and behavioural barriers to Energy Efficiency investments. Energy Efficiency policy can thus play an important role in meeting the economy’s goal of faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth.
