Abstract:

Accelerated Sea Level Rise is one of the most certain outcomes of global warming leading to increased threat to human safety and shoreline development. Mangroves act as the lifelines of a coastal city like Mumbai, where they face immense anthropogenic pressure. This study presents the assessment of the anthropogenic pressures and climatic pressures like Sea Level Rise on the mangroves of Mumbai. Population pressure and resulting lack of space has caused encroachment into the mangrove areas and has been the main factor leading to degradation of mangroves in Mumbai. The biotic pressure on mangroves is making the Mumbai coastline more vulnerable to Sea Level Rise and associated impacts. This paper also discusses the use of views and preferences of the stakeholders of mangrove ecosystem to understand the attributes of importance they assign to the Mumbai mangroves, existing pressures on the mangroves and possible management options.
