Abstract:

A small-scale forestry CDM project titled “Afforestation under a windfarm in Sakri, Maharashtra” has been developed, after a feasibility study of three wind farms in India. Literature shows that while the LULUCF sector in India, has enormous potential for climate change mitigation projects, devising the CDM related technical and methodological approach for such activities, pose many challenges. This research paper is a comprehensive analysis of all the components of the proposed CDM activity and highlights the baseline, additionality, leakage and non-permanence of the project. The net anthropogenic GHG removals as a result of the project and the expected CER revenue have been estimated. The environmental and social impacts of the project have been assessed. Suggestions for enhancing the environmental, financial and socio-economic benefits accrued from a forestry project, together with; the research problems confronted have also been discussed. In addition, a PDD has been prepared to forward the project through the CDM approval cycle.
