Abstract:

The rapid rate of urbanization and increasing income has led to increased plastic waste generation in NDMC area. Increasing consumption of plastic and its popularity is owing to its easy handling property. But the caveat is that plastic is an artificial polymer and is non-biodegradable which increase the volume of municipal solid waste. NDMC is very active to manage plastic waste along with MSW and assisted by Chintan (an NGO), Resident’s Welfare Associations (RWAs), M/s fume s International Pvt. Ltd. (private operator) and rag pickers. Activities are not confined to the NDMC areas only but also other parts of Delhi, which supplements the plastic waste management in NDMC area. There are different patches of Delhi where the plastic recycling units are established. Recycling sector is man informal setup, which mostly does not comply with various environmental legislations. NDMC area is blessed to have a dynamics network for plastic recycling, but some of the plastic is being dumped at sanitary landfill site, Ghazipur despite having a recycling potential. It is absolute wastage of the valuable resource. Revamping the recycling sector with effective policy and technological approaches will make plastics a boon than a bane.
