Abstract: BP and TERI have jointly taken up a large scale biodiesel demonstration project called ‘Project Green’ in West Godavari, East Godavari, Krishna and Khammam districts in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate the viability of bio-diesel production from Jatropha Curcas L at commercial scale using the most appropriate optimum technologies, and to understand the environmental & socio-economic impacts.

The value chain of the project read as; Production of Feedstock by planting Jatropha Curcas L in the plantation area following a contract farming system, Collection of Oil Seeds from the farmers, Seed Storage, Expelling of Oil from the oil seeds in the Expeller Unit, Oil Storage and lastly the Transesterification of the oil to convert into biodiesel.

The primary objective of this study was to “identify a sustainable mechanism for collection of seeds and its transport to the expelling centers that would maximize returns to the local economy”. West Godavari and Krishna districts were chosen as the area of study for basic field work and demonstration of a suitable mechanism. A two phase approach was adopted. The first phase of the study was to gain familiarity with the ongoing project, Project Green, through published literature and discussions with professionals at TERI, New Delhi and the identification of the problem in hand. The second phase was given to collection and synthesis of primary data from the two plantation districts of Andhra Pradesh.

This study tries to examine three identified mechanisms for collection of seeds which would be the best possible alternatives from a farmer’s prospective. The study concludes by stating the best solution for the problem in hand and recommends two different solutions, one for the short term and one for the long term of the project’s life.
