Abstract: Rapid growth in industrialization in the last few decades has aggravated already existing environmental problems in the country. Thus, new innovative techniques for sustainable utilization of natural resources and its protection from toxic releases is vital for sustainable socio-economic development. The project was aimed at determining a suitable treatment and disposal option for leachate management in the TSDF site of Karnataka considering the effectiveness of the technology as well as cost requirements. For this purpose activated sludge process was set up in the laboratory and effectiveness of the treatment was studied on the collected leachate sample. Other treatment options were also studied with the help of case studies as well as industrial visits to effluent treatment plant and industry. It was observed that biological treatment alone couldn’t suffice the discharge requirements thus; post-treatment of the leachate with reverse osmosis is recommended. But even this technology has its limitations, thus an integrated Multi-Effect Evaporator and spray drier was found to be the most feasible technology in terms of effectiveness in treating large amount of waste with minimum costs. It has also been observed that there are many ways in which, industries can minimize waste but at present not much is being done. Future work would be focused on the study of different promising treatment schemes, combination of other treatment methods as well as finding new ways of minimizing waste.
