Business sustainability reporting- A case for NTPC/ Vindhyachal super thermal power project

Abstract:

True Development is that which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs i.e. judicious use of natural resources for the progress of society without hampering the environment.

It encompasses not only the financial progress, but also account for the social and environmental progress too.—i.e Sustainability Slowly its becoming mandatory for the companies to report on the sustainability issues i.e. reporting to be done not only on wealth creation by the company but also on the value addition to the society and the environment.

NTPC Ltd was incorporated in 1975 to accelerate power development of India and today it become the India’s largest power generating company. Strong Management strategies take care of changing business environment and in tune with that NTPC Ltd in its Business plan has decided to submit the sustainability report for their power projects.

The GRI guidelines provide a voluntary reporting framework used by organizations around the world as basis for sustainability reporting. GRI is the generally accepted worldwide format and framework for measuring, disclosing, and being held accountable to internal and external stakeholders for organizational performance toward the goal of sustainable development.Owning to advantages of GRI Reporting, its been proposed to NTPC Ltd for sustainability reporting on GRI Platform.

Exploratory research in the form of inputs from the existing documented research work available in the form of journals, white papers, articles available in book form or on the internet was done to understand, define, design and hypothesize the research problem .GRI Format states for reporting on various generalized performance indicators ,so selection of indicators/parameters relevant to NTPC Business is formulated for research work. A questionnaire was prepared for sample survey and administered among senior executives of NTPC Ltd to rank the indicators in the scale of 1-10 . Hypothesis testing was done through SPSS/Microsoft software for selection of performance indicators.

This dissertation work focuses on the issues pertaining to sustainability reporting by NTPC Ltd. The study includes recommendations regarding the selection of the indicators for reporting by NTPC Ltd in GRI Format. Further the study also focuses on giving the rating/effectiveness to the sustainability reports of various projects of NTPC for benchmarking and improvements. The study also tries to evolve a roadmap for reporting of performance, requirement of new organizational processes, selection of indicators and adaptation of some of the best practices of noteworthy companies world-wide.

Chapter-I introduce and describe the topic/methodology and its relevance for the NTPC’s Business.Previous work done in this area and future scope for work.
Chapter-II Provides an overview profile of India’s largest Power generating company NTPC Ltd. Strong management strategies for overall growth of the company, Various projects of NTPC Ltd and its commitment towards sustainable development .NTPC/Vindhyachal (VSTPP) is the largest power project of NTPC with the capacity of 3200MW ,moving ahead for preparing Sustainability report.
Chapter -III Discuss why sustainability is the biggest concern before management to decide the future business strategies .The purpose and prevalent practices worldwide for sustainability reporting.
Chapter -IV Discuss the growing trend for sustainability reporting. Various prevalent sustainability guidelines worldwide. GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) guidelines is an multi-stakeholder effort to create a common framework for voluntary reporting on sustainability issues, The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) joined the GRI as a key partner .The GRI mission is to elevate the quality and comparability of sustainability reporting practice worldwide .So adoption of these GRI guidelines by NTPC/Vindhyachal for sustainability reporting.
Chapter -V Highlights the learning’s from the Literature reviews, recommendations for follow-up by NTPC/Vindhyachal sustainability report. GRI sustainability guidelines ask for companies to report on Performance indicators under various categories of economic,environment,society,human rights, labour practices,product responsibility. So this section discuss the research methodology adopted for selecting the relevant performance indicators under various categories ,suitable for NTPC/Vindhyachal business.Highlights the aspects of the survey conducted and the result interpretation by the statistical tools like Hypothesis testing.
Chapter -VI makes data analysis and interpretation , Hypothesis testing and recommends the various indicators suitable for performance reporting by NTPC/Vindhyachal
Chapter -VII makes recommendations and conclusions based on Survey results and the Literature reviews .Also focuses on the Limitations of this study.
