Abstract: Land suitability is the fitness of a given type of land for a defined use. Its basic purpose is to
determine the appropriateness of a given landscape for a particular use. The basic premise of
suitability analysis is that each aspect of the landscape has. Intrinsic characteristics that are in some
degree either suitable or unsuitable for the activities being planned and that these relationships can
be revealed through detailed evaluation and assessment. Due to development of automation in
technological processes applied to data gathering, integration and processing of topographic details
and their customized presentation, analysis and interpretation the challenges can be met with the
help Desktop GIS system. While Geographical Information System (GIS) involves in integration of
spatially referenced data in a problem solving environment, GIS-based Land Information System
(LIS) is an interactive computer-based systems that help decision makers utilize data and models to
solve unstructured problems. In this particular project, thematic maps have been prepared by
weighted grid method containing percent limits of land suitability for the area i.e. Rewari. Suitability
parameters have been identified, and then these have been given weight-age village wise. Also an
Information System has been customized using Arc GIS Engine for fast retrieval of information for
suitability. A web based application has been created, in which query attributes and geo-processing
tool has been incorporated for online querying and analysis. Some buttons have been customized on
Arc GIS Desktop for fast access.
