India is witnessing rapid urbanization, which is leading to social transformation and enormous economic growth that transforms the socioeconomic and natural environment in the nation. This study investigates the dual aspects of urbanization: its role as a catalyst for economic development and its adverse impacts on the environment. By exploring these dimensions, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of urbanization's effects on India's growth and ecological sustainability. Additionally, it is intriguing to study the significant economic role of urban areas, given that they occupy only a small percentage of India’s land while contributing substantially to the country’s GDP. However, this rapid urbanization raises important questions about its sustainability and potential adverse effects on the environment. As urban centers expand, understanding and promoting the need for this balance between economic growth and environmental health becomes crucial.
By employing nightlight data to assess urbanization trends across various states and cities, along with econometric analyses, this research identifies a strong positive correlation between urbanization and economic growth. Additionally, the findings indicate that the negative environmental effects of urbanization can be effectively addressed through carefully designed policies.
