Abstract:

As climate change accelerates, Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) are uniquely positioned to lead the charge toward sustainability (Melville-Rea and Arndt, 2024). This study, conducted at the TERI School of Advanced Studies, explores how HEIs can transition to net-zero emissions through a structured framework that integrates infrastructure, stakeholder behaviour, and institutional governance. Inspired by global efforts like the Paris Agreement and India’s UGC U75 initiative, the research aims to transform campuses into living laboratories for climate action.

Using a combination of systematic literature review and empirical data collection, the study assessed students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours toward sustainability. While students showed strong support for net-zero goals, their actions and understanding were often limited—highlighting a gap between intention and practice. Statistical analysis revealed that factors such as age, academic discipline, and income influenced sustainability engagement, with environmentally focused programs showing higher awareness and commitment.

To better understand stakeholder dynamics, the Mendelow Matrix was used to map influence and interest across groups. Faculty and students emerged as key players, suggesting that empowering these groups could accelerate institutional change. The resulting Net Zero Transition Framework offers a replicable model for HEIs, emphasizing the need for inclusive governance, curriculum integration, and behavioural nudges to drive meaningful climate leadership.
