Abstract:

The social vertical often receives less attention, importance compared to environmental and economic vertical. This research aims importance to identify and analyze the social risks faced by the Indian automobile industry suppliers. To address these risks, this research proposes a three-step mitigation approach first, companies must assess their current social welfare standing; second, calibrate their practices against industry benchmarks and legal mandates; and third, implement tailored action plans to close identified risk. Recognizing that all three pillars should go hand in hand, this study addresses the risks posed by neglecting the social pillar. The research adopts a mixed-method approach, integrating from academic literature, policy documents, and on-site factory visits. A comprehensive checklist was developed based on these sources, capturing key indicators such as wage equity, working hours, occupational safety, social security provisions, and gender inclusivity. This checklist was used to evaluate four Tier-1 suppliers within the Indian automobile industry. The analysis revealed persistent social risk a supplier can face and might result in compliance issue, affecting its operations and business continuity.

Post-COVID, the urgency to address social aspects has intensified, with increased scrutiny on mental health, job security, and ethical labour practices. The study proposes a strategic action plan to help companies strengthen their social sustainability frameworks. By institutionalizing socially responsible practices, firms not only enhance employee satisfaction and reduce turnover but also improve their reputation in both domestic and global markets.

This research underscores the importance of embedding social sustainability into the operational fabric of automotive supply chains to achieve holistic and resilient development outcomes.
