ANNOUNCEMENTS
India’s transition to a clean energy future is both a necessity and an opportunity, especially as it aims for net-zero emissions by 2070. Biogas, a renewable fuel derived from organic waste, emerges as a powerful enabler in this context due to its dual role in waste management and greenhouse gas mitigation. By evaluating their contribution to emission reductions, governmental support mechanisms, and the financial sustainability of carbon markets, this research explores the potential for carbon credits from biogas facilities in India. Using secondary data from 2015 to 2025, to evaluate trends and forecast carbon credit generation. The report estimates India currently generates over 3.23 million tCO₂e annually through biogas, with significant room for expansion. It emphasizes how biogas contributes to India’s clean cooking, rural development, and methane abatement targets. Key government programs like SATAT, GOBAR-DHAN, and the National Bioenergy Programme provide the institutional support needed to scale these technologies. By aligning biogas deployment with voluntary and compliance carbon markets, India can unlock both environmental and economic co-benefits. The report offers a strategic roadmap for expanding biogas infrastructure and monetizing carbon reductions to drive sustainable growth.
