Abstract:

This study critically examines the transformation of Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) in the context of nations commitment to achieve net zero emissions and broader energy transition. The NEM plays a pivotal role in shaping country’s path towards net zero emissions future from the electricity market side. Given Central to this analysis is AEMO’s ISP, which outlines strategic pathways for decarbonizing the NEM. The study begins by mapping the current structure, generation mix and operational dynamics of the NEM. Further, forecast as given in the ISP and other collected historic data were critically analyzed to understand whether the ODP laid out in ISP seems achievable with comparing it with The project also showcases a case study on South Australia, a state at the forefront of solar integration. This case investigates the impact of high solar penetration on various power market dynamics, with increasing incidence of negative prices. The project combines analysis of market data with critical review of policy and planning documents, offering insights into challenges and opportunities associated with accelerating Australia’s energy transition.
