As the automotive industry intensifies its efforts toward sustainability, most attention remains focused on manufacturing and product innovation. Yet, a substantial portion of emissions originates downstream - through dealership operations and product use - which remains underreported and insufficiently addressed. This study shifts the lens to the dealership level, assessing RE integration as a viable strategy for reducing Scope 3 emissions.
The research explores industry trends, benchmarks leading automotive companies operating in India, and gathers insights from a customer perception survey to evaluate awareness and preferences around clean energy use in dealerships. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines analysis of public disclosures with primary survey data to understand both the operational and reputational value of transitioning to RE.
By centering downstream decarbonisation in automotive ESG strategies, this paper underscores the importance of a full-spectrum energy transition that includes retail touchpoints in the journey toward net zero.
