Abstract:

India is facing a sharp contrast between its increasing urban population and available services and resources. Solid waste management (SWM) is one such service where India has an enormous gap to fill. SDG 6 deals with clean water and sanitation. Swachh Survekshan 2018 happens to be the world’s largest sanitation survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India (GoI) for close to 4200 cities. It was an extensive survey done across various dynamic indicators along with data sampling and was carried out from 4 January 2018 and concluded around 15 March 2018. The objective of the survey is to encourage large scale citizen participation and create awareness among all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a better place to live in. Additionally, the survey also intends to foster a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities to improve their service delivery to citizens, towards creating cleaner cities.
