Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells anywhere in a body. There are over 200 types of cancer eg lungs cancer, brain tumour, ovarian cancer etc.
Each normal cell in our body undergoes a division through a cycle called the cell cycle.Anything that may cause a normal body cell to divide abnormally making the cell grow out-of-control and invade other tissues are called the causative agents could be as follows: chemical or toxic compound exposures, ionizing radiation, some pathogens, and human genetics.
Global cancer incidence: both sexes : top three (source wcrf.org).
Lung and breast cancers were the most common cancers worldwide, each contributing 12.3% of the total number of new cases diagnosed in 2018.Colorectal cancer was the third most common cancer with 1.8 million new cases in 2018.
Treatment protocols vary according to the type and stage of the cancer. Most treatments include at least one of the following and may include all: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.I will be focusing onl on the role of gene in cancer.
The Role of Genes in Cancer:The roots of cancer lie in genes. Cancer begins when a gene changes, or "mutates." This allows cells to grow out of control.
But mapping the sequence of DNA helped them see what was normal and what wasn't. Now they can pinpoint problems with genes that are linked to cancer and see how cells interact to spark tumor growth. The goal of gene therapy is to correct such problems by fixing them at the source.
CRISPR/Cas9 is currently being investigated as a potential cancer immunotherapy by a range of research groups worldwide. CRISPR/Cas9 is an experimental gene editing technique that potentially could be used in the treatment of a wide range of disorders caused by DNA mutations.
