Abstract:

Ramganga River is the first main tributary of River Ganga. It traverses through highly industrialized cities of Uttar Pradesh before its confluence with Ganga, thereby making both groundwater regime of the basin and surface water of Ganga vulnerable to pollution. For understanding groundwater pollution, it is of utmost importance to understand the prevailing hydrodynamics of the region and stream-aquifer interaction in both space and time. Groundwater modelling facilitates simulation of prevailing real-time situations and projecting future scenarios. The present study aims to simulate a groundwater flow model using Visual MODFLOW using RIV package to understand the existing flow-dynamics, stream-aquifer relationship and estimate the volumetric mass balance prevailing in the parts of Ramganga Basin. The simulation reveals the influent nature of the river throughout the year. The Volumetric mass budget was successfully simulated with a minimal discrepancy of -0.06%.
