Abstract:

Former president and missile man of India respected A.P.J.Abdul has once said “Sanitation is a noble mission for the nation.” Inspired from these words the present research has been conducted on the topic entitled “Past Present and Future Scenario of Sanitation: A Comparative Study.” According to WHO, in simple words means “availability of services and facilities for safe and proper disposal of human excreta and sewage”, which is ultimately related to public health conditions.

In the present work, a comparative study has been done on the past, present and future sanitation scenario. Three major objectives have been targeted in this study: (a) addressing urban sanitation challenges, ground realities and emerging opportunities of two cities of India Delhi and Patna (b) to understand the financing of urban sanitation in cities of India and (c) comparing urban sanitation parameters of least and best performing regions. Primary survey, secondary survey and analysis of collected data are three steps used during entire study.

After all these analysis and study three important conclusions have been drawn. The most important challenge observed during the study is “there is a lacuna of children friendly toilet as well as common amenities were also lacking.” A positive point analyzed from this study is that an infrastructural base has been by us (India) but still we are lacking in acceptance level in terms of behavior. The third important conclusion is “ODF (open defecation free) goal has been one of the most important goals of sanitation these days.” And India is inching towards it in step-by-step manner but still there is a long way to go.

Overall, in few words it can be concluded that compared to past people and government are more aware right now but still both have to travel a long journey in a well-coordinated manner to achieve the desired targets to fulfil the dreams of a clean India and a healthy India.
