Airports are not only a mode of transport but are also bustling hubs of globalization, creating a connection between people and cultures across different parts of the world. They also create multiple business opportunities under one roof which create a large value chain. As passengers we see airports as a platform of transport but as an industry airports have a good number of responsibilities, the duty of seamless operation and transport. The aviation industry offers a global business network which has major contributions in the tourism industry and economic growth in the society. Nearly 2 billion passengers are transported annually through airlines. This industry alone creates nearly 29 million job opportunities globally through direct and indirect impacts. Therefore, the economic contribution is almost 8% of the world's GDP. Now, this huge business ecosystem runs with a cost of several environmental impacts which can no longer be overlooked.Especially for Greenfield airports the environmental impact is even deeper. In certain cases, managing the environment becomes a major responsibility of the airport authority to sustain in the long run. In this context, it is to be mentioned that getting Environment Clearance is a mandatory step before establishing an airport. Any negative impact on the local flora and fauna, water resources, air quality and local communities would become a liability for the airport authority otherwise.
While it can be a point of debate for investors whether sustainability is worth making a priority or not due to economic challenges and unsure effectiveness, this research paper would rightly illustrate how airport operations can be made greener and profitable at the same time.
