Abstract:

This “study explores the multifaceted challenge of achieving water neutrality at Noida International Airport (NIA), a greenfield project in India. Employing a scientific approach, the research investigates strategies to minimize water consumption and establish a sustainable water management plan for NIA.”

“The initial section delves into the concept of water neutrality and outlines a four-step scientific roadmap for NIA to achieve this goal. This roadmap emphasizes the importance of conducting thorough hydrogeological and hydrological studies to understand the local water resources and define the area of influence. Furthermore, the framework highlights the value of adopting a recognized water neutrality framework and conducting impact assessment studies to ensure responsible water management practices beyond NIA's immediate boundaries.”

Following the scientific approach, the research investigates water consumption patterns within the aviation industry. Benchmarking data from various Indian and international airports is analyzed to provide a comparative perspective for NIA's water management strategy. The analysis emphasizes the significance of calculating water consumption per passenger as a crucial metric for NIA. This metric allows for performance benchmarking, identification of areas for improvement, setting ambitious water neutrality goals, and monitoring progress towards achieving them.

“The research acknowledges limitations in the available data and underscores the need to consider factors like data source consistency, passenger profile, and climatic conditions when interpreting water consumption benchmarks. By employing a data-driven approach informed by scientific principles and benchmarking exercises, NIA can establish itself as a leader in water conservation within the Indian aviation sector and contribute to the advancement of sustainable water management practices globally.”
