Abstract:

This research explores the implementation of Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) within India's forestry sector, focusing on the carbon mitigation potential and the integration of these practices within state-level policy frameworks. The study examines the effectiveness and challenges of NCS across five Indian states: Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan. By assessing the implementation strategies and outcomes, the research identifies key natural climate solutions, evaluates the decision-making processes during roundtable discussions among forest officials and scientists, and investigates the barriers to broader adoption of these solutions.

The findings reveal a diverse range of NCS practices with varying degrees of success and challenges. Significant carbon mitigation potentials are documented, alongside detailed case studies that highlight both innovative practices and significant obstacles. The roundtable discussions prove critical for knowledge exchange and collaboration, yet they also expose gaps in current policy approaches and the need for more robust training programs to enhance the implementation strategies.

The study concludes with strategic recommendations for improving NCS policies and practices, suggesting enhancements in training modules, the integration of local and indigenous knowledge, and the establishment of collaborative platforms to foster continuous improvement and adaptation of NCS initiatives. These recommendations aim to bolster India's role in global climate action efforts and enhance the sustainability and efficacy of its natural climate solutions.
