The lock industry in Talanagri, in the Aligarh district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has significantly contributed to a rapid economic growth in the recent years. However, the industry open to challenges from competition led by the Chinese products, implementation of GST, impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. The lock industry is now in a financially unstable condition. The proposed research aims to understand the complex dynamics of the relationship among industrialization, environmental degradation (including access to clean water) and its impact on the health by focusing on demographic variables such as age, income, health of the laborers and their family members. Workers of both genders could be seen working in this industry.
Health issues are a constant problem---skin diseases are common among others. Factories and warehouses are dirty, unhealthy and suffocating. This thesis shall use both primary and secondary materials and available data. The primary data was collected through a field survey of 150 laborers and 44 household respondents were selected using snow-ball sampling. Secondary materials were collected from the Aligarh pollution board during the five years of data collection. The analyses is of a logit and probit model in ‘R’ is used to identify the key variables affecting the environmental impact of the lock industry. The industry employs people not only from Aligarh town but also from neighboring villages in the district. The city generates around 10,000 tons of waste water annually from factories, with 65% of household and 35% from industrial establishments. This waste adversely affects the health of the people who are working in the factory as well as the people who are living nearby. The study employs a CVM methodology to address the research objective. The logit and probit model used in the analysis will help understand the relationship between industry emission and environmental degradation.
This research aims to give the stakeholders and policymakers a thorough understanding of environmental degradation in the lock industries in Aligarh. Promoting sustainable practices and enhancing environmental consciousness will improve the living conditions of both labour and household while reducing the negative impact on the environment.
