Abstract:

This study investigates the factors influencing tourist satisfaction in Bodh Gaya and Rajgir, two culturally and historically significant destinations in Bihar, India. Employing a Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) with a constant sum scale approach, the research explores tourist preferences and their willingness to pay for improvements across various attributes of their visit. The findings highlight the multifaceted nature of tourist satisfaction in these destinations. Environmental quality, encompassing the preservation of natural resources, cleanliness, and waste management, emerged as a top priority for visitors. Accessibility, particularly improved transportation in Bodh Gaya and the promotion of local experiences in Rajgir, was another key concern. Analysis of open-ended responses revealed distinct challenges faced by each location. Bodh Gaya grapples with infrastructural limitations (accommodation, public transport) and sanitation issues. Rajgir, while facing similar infrastructural challenges, also struggles with concerns over heritage protection and deteriorating air quality. Based on these analyses, the study proposes recommendations for enhancing tourist satisfaction. Upgrading accommodation options, particularly budget-friendly choices, is crucial. Investments in infrastructure, encompassing improved transportation networks and waste management practices, are essential. Prioritizing environmental protection through stricter policies and promoting eco-tourism are necessary for long-term sustainability. Furthermore, fostering cultural immersion and developing wellness tourism initiatives in Rajgir hold significant potential.

This research contributes to a deeper understanding of tourist satisfaction in Bodh Gaya and Rajgir. By identifying key factors and challenges, the study provides valuable insights for stakeholders to develop targeted strategies that enhance the visitor experience, promote sustainable tourism practices, and contribute to the economic development of the region.
