Abstract:

The master's thesis, titled "Unearthing the Truth: Mica Mining in Jharkhand – Related Occupational Hazards," undertakes an in-depth exploration of the mica mining industry in the state of Jharkhand, India. Beyond the glittering surface, this research aims to reveal the hidden challenges faced by the mica mining workers, particularly children, engaged in mica extraction. With a focus on occupational hazards, the study aims to highlight the hidden aspects related to the mica mining industry that often evade the public eye. Utilizing a comprehensive analytical framework, the study incorporates the Health Production Function (HPF) as its methodology. This approach helps in understanding the relationships between working conditions, health outcomes, and the economic dynamics of the mica mining industry. The study creates an in-depth foundation by carefully examining the existing literature including government reports, scholarly papers and other relevant documents. As the research progresses, a consistent theme emerges highlighting the need for improved worker protection, stricter regulatory measures, and increased societal awareness. This thesis aims to highlight the challenges faced by the mica workers and points out the severity and widespread of the occupational hazards. It aspires to come up with policy implications that could help in addressing the occupational hazards in mica mining industry. By providing vital insights to the current discussion on mining ethics, worker welfare, and health outcomes, this study aims to make a significant impact on the development of the mica mining narrative in Jharkhand.
