Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the development of a comprehensive plastic footprint calculator for effective plastic waste management. The objective is to review existing methodologies and suggest mitigation measures to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution. The research begins with an extensive literature review to gain insights into different plastic footprint calculation methodologies. Four calculators, including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, PCX, and ReSource Plastic Footprint Tracker, are analysed for their strengths and weaknesses. This evaluation forms the basis for the development of a customized plastic footprint calculator. Data collection involves categorizing plastic waste into different types of polymers and forms, assessing recyclability, and evaluating the use of virgin and recycled plastic. Through Microsoft Excel, the final matrices display the total weight of plastic in various categories and the percentage of recyclable/reusable/compostable plastic waste. The assessment of the calculated plastic footprint provides crucial insights into the company's plastic waste generation. It identifies the significant contribution of flexible and rigid plastic categories, emphasizing the need for effective mitigation measures. The suggested mitigation measures encompass source reduction, recycling and waste management, circular economy initiatives, awareness and education, product and packaging innovation, collaboration, and advocacy. While these measures are based on extensive research, their implementation may vary depending on the company's discretion and specific circumstances. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the importance of sustainable plastic waste management and the role of the developed plastic footprint calculator in guiding informed decision-making. This research contributes to the field of plastic waste management by offering a comprehensive framework for understanding and assessing plastic footprints. The findings can guide organizations towards effective mitigation strategies and promote a more sustainable approach to plastic waste management. Further research and collaboration are encouraged to refine plastic footprint calculation methodologies and drive positive change towards a circular economy and reduced plastic pollution.
