Abstract:

The Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh has placed significant strains on the livelihoods of the displaced population. This study aims to assess the challenges, prospects, and socioeconomic factors influencing the enhancement of Rohingya refugees' livelihoods in Bangladesh. The research employs a quantitative survey to collect data on general information, income sources, socioeconomic factors, environment dependence, food and nutrition, and the relationship with the host community. The findings provide insights into the multifaceted nature of their livelihoods and shed light on potential avenues for improvement. The results highlight the challenges faced by Rohingya refugees in accessing livelihood opportunities. Legal constraints, limited education, and employment restrictions hinder their access to formal employment and entrepreneurial activities. The absence of legal recognition and documentation exacerbates these challenges. Additionally, the study reveals the environment's dependence, as Rohingya refugees heavily rely on natural resources for their livelihoods, such as forests, water bodies, and agricultural land.

Food and nutrition emerge as critical aspects of their livelihoods. The study examines the status of food security and nutritional well-being among Rohingya refugees. It reveals the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women. Addressing these challenges is crucial for improving the overall livelihoods and well-being of the Rohingya community. The relationship with the host community plays a significant role in shaping the livelihoods of Rohingya refugees. The study explores the dynamics between the Rohingya population and the host community, including social integration, economic interactions, and cultural exchange. Understanding these dynamics can provide valuable insights into fostering social cohesion, reducing tensions, and creating opportunities for economic collaboration and mutual support.

Social support networks within the Rohingya community and the host community provide resources, information, and emotional support related to income-generating activities. The sympathetic urge and attitude of host communities towards Rohingya people is seen to be declining since past 4 years. In this context, qualitative research is undertaken to understand the on ground perspective of the communities. Access to financial services, including microfinance and savings mechanisms, positively impacts financial inclusion and economic resilience is also studies using quantitative survey. Policy recommendations are proposed based on the study findings to enhance the livelihoods of Rohingya refugees. These include addressing legal barriers, investing in education and skills training, promoting sustainable resource management practices, strengthening food security programs, fostering inter-community dialogue, and implementing inclusive economic policies. These recommendations aim to improve economic integration, social empowerment, and overall well-being.

This research contributes to the existing knowledge on enhancing the livelihoods of Rohingya refugees in Ukhiya district of Bangladesh. By understanding the challenges and leveraging the prospects, stakeholders can develop evidence-based strategies to improve their livelihoods, promote social cohesion, and address the broader issues of displacement and vulnerability.
