Abstract:

Urbanization is an important aspect of the development and it also increases the socio-economic status of the community as well as brings more job opportunities, but this urbanization happens at the cost of deterioration of environment. Hussain Sagar Lake is the one of the classic examples of such profound effects due to urbanization. Hussain Sagar Lake is one of the oldest man-made lake built in 1562AD, across the Musi River. This lake is situated in the center of the Hyderabad city, it is in a heart shape. This lake was primarily built for the purpose of supply of water to the city and neighboring cities. Later on, the lake started became the main sewage collection zone for the twin cities that is form the Hyderabad and Secunderabad. This study focuses on the impact of urbanization on the lake environment and its correlation with the total dissolve solids delves into the repercussions of urbanization affect the lake's environment and water quality. The study is carried out by using geographic information system for studying the effects of urbanization on the lake. The images collected for the study was from Landsat Level 2 satellite which is from the year 2000 to 2022. This is utilized to determine the LULC and the lake's physio-chemical characteristics, which for this study is TDS. Built-up can be determined from the LULC and TDS values which are satellite calculated. It is found that with the increase in the built-up area or the urbanization there is an increase in the TDS values of the lake. Hence, more sewage is being received by the lake. This study can be utilized to create and put into action strategies that will lessen the negative consequences of urbanization and safeguard the lake.
