Flooding has often inundated the special economic zone of Visakhapatnam due its low-lying area. Given the intensified repercussions of changing climate and rapid urbanization, it has become very crucial to chart out the vulnerable zones of a city, to analyse the various measures to safeguard the interests of several businesses situated out of the high-risk areas. The technology of remote sensing has been a promising tool for the purpose of monitoring and eradicating the threats. Flood risk zone mapping and detection of changing shoreline is essential for a city to protect its infrastructure. Hence, this paper took into account the multi influencing factors viz., rainfall variation data, slope of the study area, drainage of the region and the land cover and the relative land use of the region, that collectively makes an area fall prey to flooding and eventually disrupt the normal courses of day-to-day businesses. Thematic mapping was done using the various tools of ArcGIS. Later, specific weightages were given to each of the identified classes based on their degree of influence they have on flooding of an area, to prepare the flood susceptibility map of Visakhapatnam. Finally, through literature review this paper has also identified the several adaptation measures to prevent flooding and coastal erosion.
