Abstract:

Urban regions in developing nations like India have problems concerning transportation that arises due to gaps in the public transportation systems and high congestion on the roads due to the increased dependency on private vehicles. The flaws in the public transit services have led to a shift in the mode-choice for urban mobility to Intermediate Public Transportation, particularly in South Delhi. Despite relevant body of literature existing that focuses on the issues persistent with Intermediate Public Transportation, there is a selective sense of understanding on the gendered perception of commuters with respect to the attributes of safety, accessibility, and utility. Therefore, this study acknowledges the lack of focus on the perceptions of users of Intermediate Public Transportation and contextualizes it further against the attributions of different gender identities particularly in the context of South Delhi. The attributes were studied using a survey questionnaire circulated among users of Intermediate Public Transportation, in-depth interviews in four locations in the district of South Delhi (INA, Chhattarpur, Munirka and South Extension I), as well as from the review of the secondary literature. The findings of the study reveal a nuanced picture of how the gender and other socioeconomic characteristics of the users of Intermediate Public Transportation impact their perceptions of accessibility, safety and utility. The perspective on gendered perceptions helps in the reimagination of a feminist sustainable urban mobility system.
