Abstract:

The study aims to evaluate circularity and decarbonization strategies adopted by five corporations operating in India and suggests an integrative framework combining key elements of circularity and decarbonization principles. The study employs mixed-method approach involving systematic review of sustainability reports and identification of key themes, targets, initiatives, and strategies related to circularity and decarbonization of the respective companies. In areas where qualitative analysis is not sufficient, an examination of quantitative metrics such GHG emissions, waste generation, and water consumption has been made. The result of the study suggests that three out of five companies perform poorly in terms of various environment parameters. In the case of two companies under study, environmental degradation has been offset by high levels of regulatory compliance and effective implementation of circularity & decarbonization strategies. The remaining companies lag behind on account of absence of clear targets, limited adoption of renewable energy technology, inadequate waste management practices, ineffective supply chain management, lack of engagement with stakeholders on sustainability issues, and incomplete emissions reporting. The study contributes to the literature on corporate sustainability by suggesting measures to enhance circular economy practices in achieving GHG emissions targets. The research also provides insights for both policymakers and sustainability officers/managers seeking to enhance corporate sustainability performance.

Key words: Circularity, Decarbonization, GHG emissions, Corporate emissions, Net Zero, Waste management, Climate Policy.
