Abstract:

The area under pulses in Bihar has greatly declined even when price s of pulses ha ve increased in recent years due to deficient production. Price realization for small farmers is the controlling factor for choosing crops for cultivation and is influenced by several dynamic processes and social structures in and across the production and marketing sides of an agricultural value chain. Therefor e, the approach needs to be capable to view the interaction of the value chain processes that have influenced farmers in Bihar to move away from pulses. The study attempts to broadly visualize the interacting value chain stakeholders and processes with kee ping farmers of small and large land owning classes as the pivot. The approach adopted in the study distinguishes the pulses agricultural ecosystem into production and marketing groups of activities and draws cause and feedback relations of the value chain activities. The relational understanding that emerges is used to extract underlying causes that affect the price realization of farmers in choosing pulses cultivation.
